Possibly most importantly, Martin is himself in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. The focus of an intervention in 1993, he has over 10 years of continuous sobriety. Personally experiencing the process of addiction and recovery from both sides allows the necessary empathy and understanding to communicate through to the addict/alcoholic breaking down barriers of denial that otherwise prove insurmountable. As the "Basic Text" of Narcotics Anonymous says, "the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel".
